Lloyd Khan
In 2012, (Jeez, that's a long time ago), I posted for the first time about Lloyd Kahn.
At the time he was 76 and I'd come across a YouTube video of him skateboarding down a hill in California, which I found really inspirational at the time. However, it wasn't just that I found skateboarding at 76 to be inspirational. It turned out that I had bought a book, "Shelter", many, many years earlier, that Lloyd had written. I'd probably bought it in my late teens or early twenties when the hippie ideals were still resonating really strongly with me, as they still are today.
Lloyd was also an editor of the now iconic "Whole Earth Catalog" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whole_Earth_Catalog), which was really the hippie bible and which, somehow, I'd managed to obtain a copy of in the late sixties. God knows how as there was no Amazon, Internet, email, websites, etc, etc.
Lloyd also researches, collates, writes and self-publishes some of the most amazing books about self-building, shelters and sustainability. Some of which I have. Plus he's a builder himself and lives in an amazing house that he and his wife built in California.
Since 2012 I've subscribed to Lloyd's occasional newsletters and tried to keep up with the adventures of this remarkable man.
He's now 89 and still skateboarding, travelling, publishing his books and continuing to be truly inspirational.
His newsletter/blog is now on Substack, the same platform that I use to create the Grateful Fred Newsletter.
The other day I came across this article about Lloyd at 89 that you might find interesting and, like me, inspirational...
